What’s New

November, 2019

Judy spent a lot of time in her garden and in the community this spring and summer. She’s heading into her painting season with several portrait commissions on her board and a private watercolor student. Contact her if you are interested in commissioning a portrait or mentoring for your progress as a watercolor painter.

Here are some of the portrait commissions Judy has done:

Our Book is Being Born!

Our book, Berta and Elmer Hader: A Lifetime of Art, is now in the final stages of completion! Our official release date is

October 17, 2013, with a book-signing party at Douglas County Library, Roseburg, OR, 7–9 pm.

We hope you’ll join us for a fun evening and first look at our beautiful book!

Book-Cover

After more than eight months of researching, writing, editing, designing, composing, image editing and more, the 144-page,

full-color book was printed at Shelton Turnbull in Eugene last week.

John and Judy did the press checks at Shelton Turnbull for 50 straight hours, and the book is now at Rose City Bindery in Portland.

The printing of a book is a fascinating process.

Here are some shots from the press checks.

Our night-shift pressman, David.

Press-Checks-3

A sheet comprised of four pages is a signature. Each side of a signature requires four plates, one for each color of ink: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.

Press-Checks-4

All the signatures for our book, stacked in piles of 3,000, ready to be packaged and shipped to the Bindery. An impressive sight!

There are four of us authors:

Joy Rich, niece of the Haders;

Karen Tolley, number one Hader fan, Executive Director of Hader Connection, Ltd., and writer extraordinaire;

Judy Waller, editing, book design and composition;

and John Waller, who handled all the images and prepared them for the book.

Learn more at Hader Connection and find a schedule of upcoming signings and presentations at Joyful Productions.

Whew!

January 8, 2013

Judy is learning lots of new stuff, working on the web sites. Just changed the links on the 127 pages of the Scientific Illustrators site to go to our new WordPress Imaging by Fox and Judy Waller Watercolors sites, working in DreamWeaver and html code. It has been a very frustrating day, John and I trying to figure out how to do all this on our own, but we finally did it!

A New Adventure: Producing a Book!

We are working with two other authors on a new project: producing and publishing a book about Berta and Elmer Hader, children’s book illustrators and authors during the Golden Age of Children’s Literature. (One of the authors is the Haders’ niece.)

This amazing, talented couple worked together on all their art and stories in an incredible stone house they built themselves overlooking the Hudson River in rural New York state. The range of their artistic abilities is phenomenal, and we are publishing this book to showcase their exemplary life together and a collection of their artwork. John is scanning the artwork and preparing the images for the book, and Judy is creating the design and layout. Here are just three examples of their wonderful work:

Paper doll magazine insert by Berta and Elmer Hader, one of many during the 1920s

Pen and ink drawing by Berta and Elmer Hader

One of Berta and Elmer Hader’s annual custom handmade linoleum block print Christmas Cards

We’ll let you know when the book is finished.

Judy Morris Workshop: Better Watercolors From Start to Finish

November 20, 2012

I used my prize money from ArtWorksNW, for my painting, Over the Top!, to take a fabulous 4-day workshop from Judy Morris at Emerald Art Center this November in Springfield. We learned many valuable lessons about composition, choosing color chords, and creating textural interest in our paintings.

Here are a couple of my favorites of her paintings. The Story is always an important component in each of her paintings, and she told a great story about “Guinness at Six,” below. Judy overheard a young woman at a show interpreting this painting: “The suits, briefcase and shiny black shoes represent the corporate world; the beer represents the average citizen, and they have no heads because the two can never see eye to eye!”

4H Photography Workshop

April 16, 2011

John and I gave a photography workshop for a whole room full of 4H photography students and some of their advisors. Very good day indoors and out, despite heavy rain! They have a month to work on their own before the next session; can’t wait to see what creative ideas they come up with!
