November, 2019 I spent a lot of time in my garden and in the community this spring and summer. I’m heading into my painting season with several portrait commissions on my board and a private watercolor student. Contact me if you are interested in commissioning a portrait or mentoring for your progress as a watercolor painter. Here are some of the portrait commissions I have done:
June 25, 2019 Much has happened since my last post on April 1, 2016. Picking up where I left off… In February Her Classics was purchased by a lifelong friend and his wife; and in June, another long-time friend purchased His Classics. This makes me happy, as these were two of my favorite paintings!
Her Classics
His Classics
April 1, 2016 Fifty pieces of Judy’s watercolor florals and portraits and John’s photography and digital art, at Fisher’s Flowers and Fine Art in Roseburg, Oregon.
May 3, 2014 My painting, “Fine-tuning Allis,” won the Silver Medal Award in this top-notch show at Emerald Art Center in Springfield, OR, compiled by juror Eileen Sorg from 343 entries nationwide.
I used my prize money from ArtWorksNW, for my painting, “Over the Top!,” to take a fabulous 4-day workshop from Judy Morris at Emerald Art Center this November in Springfield. We learned many valuable lessons about composition, choosing color chords, and creating textural interest in our paintings. Here are a couple of my favorites of her paintings. The Story is always an important component in each of her paintings, and she told a great story about “Guinness at Six,” below. Judy overheard a young woman at a show interpreting this painting: “The suits, briefcase and shiny black shoes represent the corporate world; the beer represents the average citizen, and they have no heads because the two can never see eye to eye!”
I will have this selection of paintings on exhibit and available for purchase at the Grand Opening of Moonlight Studios, 131 Locust Street, Oakland, OR, during their Grand Opening on November 18, during Oakland's annual Wine and Antiques Walk. I will be there during the Opening. My paintings will remain on exhibit through December 15.
Limited Time Offer:

50% Off on a selection of my watercolor paintings (See selection below ).
All these paintings are beautifully custom-framed. Contact me by e-mail (johnwaller@qwest.net).

My watercolor painting, "Over the Top!" won the Second Place Award at Umpqua Valley Arts Association's ArtWorks NW 2012 northwest regional juried show!! Juror was internationally recognized sculptor Michael Cooper.
Two hundred and fifty-four entries were submitted and 43 works, both two- and three-dimensional, were chosen for this "best-ever at UVAA" show. It is very unusual for one artist to have three paintings accepted into one show, but two more of my paintings were also accepted:
What a thrill for me!!
I just finished participating in Vinita Pappas's 3-day online workshop "Loosen Up!" She gave us some valuable tools to use to find our way to greater, happier creativity in our artwork. I hope to be able to use what she taught us to bring a little more mystery into my very literal watercolor paintings. Here is a painting I did in the workshop. It was pretty scary (but very exciting) to try to paint this loosely! Vinita is a great teacher!
